the most important decision for making a career out of a job is that you love what you do. when you love what you do, you do it well and are happy. too many people listen to stories of how to get rich by being a doctor or lawyer, or whatever, but do not ever work for them or weigh the pros and cons of this "whatever" before going to study for it. for example, once i was studying to be a doctor. i did not finish, but now i am happy that i am not always on my feet or dealing with HMOs and PPOs and not being able to give my patients the time all deserve. i would not love that.

a career is important to you because if you are performing work that is meaningful, you walk away each day with a feeling of self respect and self esteem.

here is an interesting fact: in judeism, the highest charitable act you can do is to give a person a job. that is not only so that he eats and can support his family. it is primarily so that he has self esteem and is a productive member of society. then he is happier, and may someday remember how it felt to get the work and the self respect. he may then want to do the same for someone else.
