The actual workings of a breakup of the UK:
1. Will the Queen still remain the head of state in Scotland or will it become a republic within the EU?

2. What would the country south of the border actually be known as? Wales and NI have no intention of leaving the union anytime soon, so would the title of our country even change? Would we still be British citizens?

These are questions that no one seems to have raised to my knowledge but just wondered what people thought. The Czech/Slovak model could perhaps provide a blueprint, but our situation is more complex than theirs was.

Please post your thoughts! I'm fascinated to know!

Nick F asked:
"Do scots as a whole actually want to leave the union?"

I think the most recent research said it was about 50:50. What's more surprising is that a larger proportion of the English want Scottish independence (edit: checked and in November there was an ICM poll - 52% of Scots and 59% of English supported Scotland's independence).

To answer the original questions:
1. I expect that will be up to the Scots.

2. Interesting question. I expect Great Britain would remain the same, but without Scotland - so Just England and Wales. And the UK would keep it's current definition of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (for anybody that didn't already know, Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain, which refers to the mainland only).

Perhaps 'Squidly Leu' should try answering the question instead of making inane comments about sheep. 'The Truth' has answered most if not all the question. It doesn't help the Union when Bliar/Brown go rushing about telling the Scots what not to do,human nature is that the more your told not to do something the more your likely to do it.

Why would the Queen want to remain head of state in Scotland when it's the Scots, particularly their MPs, who have done so much damage to her country ? Mind you, she would probably miss Balmoral.

I'm also intrigued to know how finance companies would be affected, specifically Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows. Of course, these all have close links with other companies in England.
Bank of Scotland in particular is one of the biggest mortgage providers in England. All the more reason to kick them out, it seems to me.
