Several years back the NFL agreed to change the rule with regards to killing the clock with the spike!
There are some regulations however.
#1...The QB can take no more than one step back
#2...The QB MUST spike the ball forward!
#3...The QB must spike the ball so that it contacts the ground BEFORE hitting an offensive lineman
In #1 if he take two or more steps back, it is intentional grounding
In #2 if he does not spike the ball forward, it is a fumble!
In #3 if he spikes and hits a lineman before the ball hits the ground, it is illegal touching!

The same reason taking a knee ends a play even though you're not down by contact - its just a convention of the rules. One is designed to burn clock (taking a knee), the other is designed to save clock (spiking)

because the spike is a legal play. it is in every playbook in the NFL. intentional grounding is illegal because he are throwing it to stop a sack or something that would be a loss in the play.

it is a designed play for clock management they say somthin like u gotta take a 3+ step drop or shotgun in order 4 da rule 2 apply
