SUNY schools are not good... especially Stony Brook, avoid it like the plague...
On the other hand, I have known very successful graduates from CUNY, particularly Baruch College.

The main difference between the two is that SUNY schools are all over the state of NY, while CUNY is all over NY city. .

In general, the state university (SUNY) schools are probably better regarded than the CUNY schools. In years past, they were not considered to be as good as many of those in other states, but I believe that is changing.

And indeed, some of the SUNY schools are very well regarded. These include Stony Brook (good mathematics program), Binghampton and Fashion Institute of Technology. And the University at Albany has a well equipped nanotechnology center, as well as degree programs in the nanosciences.

The City University system has a total of 400,000 students, and in general it offers a pretty good value. Selected programs at some of the CUNY schools are considered to be reasonably good (particularly the four-year colleges). Brooklyn College has a good liberal arts program, while Baruch is known for business. Hunter College is considered to be good as well.

If you want to be in New York City, then all of the CUNY schools are there, but only a couple of the SUNY schools are in the city.

A couple of the SUNY schools are quite good. A recent study reported that SUNY Geneseo students have test scores and grades that are comparable to Harvard, Princeton, and Yale students. SUNY Stony Brook is also pretty good, though possibly better for graduate school than undergrad.
