What am I missing here?
(I'm British and would pronounce it as "kraygslist".)

Surely the American pronunciation of the name Craig is "krayg"?

Facetious5488's "speed" answer had me nodding my head but then Deedraz's answer made me even more curious. Here is where I heard "kregslist" (a news report): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4y6LqhrdAxg
When the first announcer says "craigslist" for the first time, it isn't so fast but still sounds like "kregslist"!

i'm american and i guess i have a bit of a southern accent...and i would pronounce every word you wrote the same way...including your version. so i'm not sure what you're asking. i suppose how we say 'craigslist' would differ from region to region.

They pronounce most words differently. The one that gets me currently is "Is Real" for Israel. They even spell it like that sometimes. My American cousin was complaining last week about us Brits pronouncing "can't" with a long 'a'

I pointed out that it's sometimes really important to hear the diff between "can" and "can't" and the change in vowel sound prevents misunderstanding. And she saw my point !

What I want to know is why they close the backs of their throats, so that they speak like Kermit the frog. The voice box is a terrific instrument, but they only use the front third, it really grates.

I think it is the speed of saying it "Kraygslist"-- say it fast, and it would sound like "Kregslist" -- and Americans speak faster than the English do.

Also why do they pronounce allot of words so differently. When I was in America I honestly couldn't understand many words...

Perhaps because in America we speak differently than ya'll do in Britain. Sorry if you hadn't picked up on that before.
