I am slowly making my car completely red and black by adding and adjusting different things. It's a bright red pontiac grand prix GT with nice looking factory rims. The metal on them was obviously painted before because they have a metallic look to them. I would love to just buy some black rims on ebay, but I don't have much cash. Would I be able to paint my rims black without fearing that the paint will just chip off right away? If I could, then how could I go about it? What do I need to buy? What type of paint?

An answer to this is greatly appriciated......

Thanks : )

Well to have the best out come of the appearance you need to have them either beed blasted or sand blasted. This removes any crap on your wheels and prevents any discoloration. If there aluminum wheels then clean them well and scuff the surface. I recommend having a professional do this for you. Most people that try this themselves regret ever doing it to start with. Think about what you do before just doing it, it could be the difference between badass wheels and ugly wheels. Peace

If it makes you happy, then yes, you should.
If they are already painted, then it's easier to repaint them than if they are bare metal.
It takes a fair bit of work to do a really good job.
You have to make sure that they are absolutely clean before you paint them, or the paint will come off. Any kind of road dirt, tire shine, car wax or oil will make the paint come off later. You have to scuff up the old paint with sandpaper, ScotchBrite, or even a wire brush.
Buy a good spray paint, Rustoleum or a High Temperature epoxy are good. It's best to have the wheels off the car when you paint them, so you don't get any paint mist on your car. If you want to brush paint them, you can buy a small can of Rustoleum, which sticks really well, and cuts down on rust problems on steel wheels. Cover up anything that you don't want to paint. Being careful doesn't always work too well.

Depending on the current finish, you would need to rub the shiny off first with something like a fine grit sand paper, or scoth brite cleaning pads (used to clean pots in the kitchen). Then use a etch type primer, couple coats at least, then a enamel black paint, and finally a nice gloss clear coat. But if you really want it to last, look up 'powder coaters' in your phone book or google your local powder coater. It is the only way to paint wheels to last.
