The Christian victory at Las Navas de Tolosa breaks Muslim power over Spain. The defeat of the Muslim navy several times in the Mediterrean at Cyprus, Malta and finally at the battle of Lepanto off of Greece. The establishment of modern day hospitals by warrior monks of St. John Order of Hospitaller.

Contrary to what another poster has indicated on 'dirty european' returning crusaders were not punished because of their habits infact much of their chivalric behavior was incorporated into european society. During this period of history the Christian Inquistion had not yet been established hence no Inquistion of them. Learn about the French Outremer in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey).

We can thank the Crusades for the stereotype of the dirty European. If someone were caught bathing "excessively" they were suspected of being Muslim and were reported. Out of fear of the Inquisition, people would forgo baths and let themselves get rather gross to avoid suspicion.

That habit seems to have lingered on today in some of the European countries.
