There are also common stocks. Other types of investments are options, warrants, contracts for difference, index options, managed funds, property trusts, bank bills, bank bonds, real estate, savings bonds, debentures, term deposits, income securities etc. There are too many to list all.

The two basic types of stocks are common and preferred. Preferred stock can be divided up into QUICS Quarterly Income Capital Securities), QUIDS (Quarterly Income Debt Securities), MIDS (Monthly Income Debt Securities), TOPrS (Trust Originated Preferred Securities), ECS (Exchangeable Capital Securities), MIPS (Monthly Income Preferred Securities). Some people will tell you there are also "growth stocks", "value stocks", "large cap stocks", mid-cap stocks", "small cap stocks", , "blue chip stocks", "micro-cap stocks". Those are not really "stocks" but types of companies. Those companies may issue stocks so they can raise money and have a little piece of themselves owned by you and me and thousands of others. Nowadays many people use the terms "stocks" and "companies" interchangeably. For more information see:
