I am in need of help I purchased a laptop from a friend and it had c:\ drive formatted so the cd-rom won't work cause of no driver and it dos'nt have a:\ so I purchased a usb to serial port cable and a lpt port extension the usb plugs into my desktop computer and lpt end plugs into laptop but my desktop wont recognize serial cable I need this to recognize my laptop to install cd-rom driver to install os someone please help

that is not possible. you need a crossover cable to direct link pc to pc or laptop to pc or vise versa

This all sounds a little bit strange, if the laptop is an operating computer with Xp installed it should have generic driver available to operate the cd drive. Don't believe you can communicate between two computers with USB to Lpt cable. Probably need an Ethernet cable.

No a usb cable connected to the desktop will not charge your laptop. Sorry but you need another charging cable. Mine broke for my apple laptop and it was 80 dollars to replace. Hope yours is a little cheaper!
