There are differences between people who are mentally ill and those who are forced on to the streets. I can't really say that we can help those who are mentally deranged, if they feel they cannot live in stable housing then that is their own prerogative, to force them to do anything different is somewhat futile. However, people who are thrown on to the streets are usually those single middle aged people. Very little financial aid is out there for those who are single and middle aged because the government just does not seem to care too much about their welfare. However, there is no reason for families with children to be on the streets because the government provides aids for poor families. Also the older ones on the streets have no reason to be there because of social security. So, I guess what is needed is more regard and help for those middle to younger aged childless peoples. See, the government believes that such people should be able to work and support themselves so the most they are willing to provide is unemployment, but that can only last so long.

"One can lead a horse to water, yet not make it drink!"

Many are willing to work, but cannot find employment!
Others may be offered several jobs, but choose not to work!

Clearly, the problem is Far beyond man's abilities to eradicate.
However, it is Not beyond our Creator's abilities ...

"They will certainly build houses and have occupancy; and they will certainly plant vineyards and eat [their] fruitage. They will not build and someone else have occupancy; they will not plant and someone else do the eating. For like the days of a tree will the days of my people be; and the work of their own hands my chosen ones will use to the full. They will not toil for nothing, nor will they bring to birth for disturbance; ..." -- (Isaiah 65:21-23)

I think we should accept them. I believe in trying to help others now matter what. But like you said there is going to be homeless people out there no matter what. And there is so much hate in this world why would we take it out on a homeless person?
Its very easy to say there are disgusting and need to get a job but we do not know their situation and what happened to get them there. I grew up in NYC and it is true that some homelss people are scary and will get on the subway train with you and scream and yell when they try to get money and noone gives it to them. I admit to changing subway cars when a smelly homeless person walked in and begged for change. BUt you cant judge everyone on a few bad apples I have learned. Not all homeless people are mean, crazy alcohalics.
Also a few years ago I helped out a homeless shelter for Thanksgiving and helped give out food to people that have no home. It was such a touching rewarding experience to help someone in need. I encourage others to do the same. I honestly wasnt sure about the whole thing and was nervous and did not know what to expect but for the most part most of these people were grateful to have a thanksgiving meal. It brought tears to my eyes to see some of these people that were so grateful and said to me " thank you so much for this meal. noone has ever cared enough to do this" Then what was even worse was after the mean to see some of these people go out into the cold because the shelter was full. So I feel that basically we need to learn to accept them. We dont have to like them or feed them or give them money when we see them on the st. But the least we could do its try to help them and not ridicule them and judge them all.

I think we should start putting more money into our problems like the homeless, instead of rebuilding the places we have bombed in Iraq-and everywhere else. Why is our country doing this?!?! There are millions of homeless in the U.S. and yet every time I turn on the TV, I see some commercial about homeless children in third world countries and how a penny a day could help them and in return I get a letter and a picture. I dont want a d#@* picture of some homeless kid in Africa! I want them to help the United States! No- we should not accept the homeless, we should start helping them more, which is impossible with Bush sending all the money overseas to "rebuild". Most of them do want help, they just dont want a handout. Write letters to your congress, your state government. Ask them how much money is being spent on the homeless. You must get action, they sure as hell cant.

alot of homeless are that way because they are crazy or addicted to booze and drugs.there will always be homeless because we are too busy trying to feed the africans, and fighting the arabs for the oil.so the homeless in this country get forgotton.are government does absolutley nothing to help them.think about it,...its the churches and other non profit organizations theat feed them and give them shelter..and it run by donations mostley..when has our government ever helped anyone but themselves?but there will be plenty of jobs after Bush kills off half of our work force in iraq.stop paying moviestars and basketball players all those millions and everyone would have a bed and some food.

In the united states there is no reason why we should have homeless period. People and by people I mean our gov. needs to step up and give these people housing. Most homeless people have mental illness and need to be cared for. Others are down on luck or have a substance abuse problem. There needs to be help for those people as well.

Unfortunately it's a terrible cycle--and I believe you are right--they will probably always be around.

I work in the addictions recovery field and some people are so deeply addicted whether only to drugs or the lifestyle and way of thinking that they don't want to change because change is different and change is uncomfortable.

I don't think we should just accept this--I think we should employ our brains to think of brilliant ways to change the world.

Personally I get upset when we ship so much aide to other countries and our own has homeless starving people. I just don't get it. I feel sorry for women and children without a home. They need to be helped somehow. Men on the other hand in my opinion can always find some kind of work unless they are in bad health.

most homeless people are that way through no fault of their own. companies close down, people can't find employment. they have families, mortgages. they lose their homes.
in the city where i live we had two large companies move overseas.
we need to help when we can, and the government needs to do more to help.

God helps those who help themselves. Well since I dont beleive in God - it should go like this. People help those who help themselves.

If they stopped spending money on smokes and drinks, I would be more inclined to help them.
IF they even TRIED to go to an employment office and tried to get a job, and tried to stay in a job for a month, I would be more inclined to help them.

They choose not to help themselves, so why should I?
