We do not support communism, but we do tolerate it. The US policy towards communism has changed since so many countries have divested themselves of it. Those who have not, don't seem to be a serious threat, particularly Vietnam.

Cuba is in our own hemisphere and has demonstrated its willingness to be a serious adversary, when in 1962, Fidel Castro, along with his good buddy Kruschev of Russia, attempted to put in offensive missiles on the island of Cuba, pointed at the US. This was a provocative move that almost led to nuclear war, however the Russians wisely capitulated and took down their missiles. The relationship with Cuba has remained strained to this day, however once Fidel Castro is dead, we can all hope that things will improve under Raul Castro.

You may be too young to remember, but there are two differences.

First, Vietnam and China have instituted market reforms that we feel will empower consumers and eventually lead to political changes we would approve of. Cuba has resolutely refused to open its political process or liberalize its markets.

Second, Cuba committed an "unforgivable" sin when it partnered with the Soviet Union (back in the early 1960's) to stage Soviet nuclear weapons aimed at the USA. Our embargo of Cuba was begun as a blockade to prevent Soviet ships from delivering missiles and other weapons that would have tipped the balance of power and given the Soviets a "first strike" advantage in the event of a Nuclear Confrontation.

Cuba serves as an example to other antagonistic governments. Don't mess with the USA or we will wreck you. Its a message we need to deliver more often.

Great question. Once Castro dies, Cuba will be a huge new market for American goods and the next low cost region for Wall Streeters to encourage corporate America to send US jobs.
