"With most sprains, you feel pain right away at the site of the tear. Often the ankle starts to swell immediately and may bruise . The ankle area is usually tender to touch, and it hurts to move it. In more severe sprains, you may hear and/or feel something tear, along with a pop or snap. You will probably have extreme pain at first and will not be able to walk or even put weight on your foot. Usually, the more pain and swelling you have, the more severe your ankle sprain is and the longer it will take to heal."

An ankle sprain can take any where from a few days to a few weeks to heal. The pain, however, can last as long as you dont take care of it! Be sure to try to stay off it as much as possible, elevate it when you sit, and ice it at night. This should help with most of the pain, and if you need something during the day to help with it, something like aleve (containing naprosyn) can help the best.

a lot of it depends on the severity and amount of damage you did to the joint. in general though it usually takes 6-8 weeks to heal completely. usually the pain will last for about 2-3 weeks gradually getting less severe. the more you stay of it the quicker it will heal also the first 24-48 hours it's a good idea to ice it 20 mins on, 20 mins off at least 3-4 times a day. also taking an anti-inflammatory (ibprofen, naproxen) will also help. most of the pain is actually caused by the swelling around the joint, which is your body's way of try to heal itself. after the first 48 hours it helps if you alternate ice and heat. the ice will help reduce swelling and the heat will help promote circulation.
you can also alternate Advil and Tylenol to help with the pain. take 1-2 Advil and then 1-2 Tylenol about 2 hours later. i will warn you this regime can be very hard on your stomach after awhile but for about the first week it will definetly help ease the pain.
RICE is also very good
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation

lRest: like I said before the more you stay off you're foot (and this includes standing even if you're using crutches) the quicker it's going to heal and the less it's going to hurt

Ice: the ice is going to help reduce swelling but after about 48 hours start introducing heat to help improve the circulation

Compression: using an Ace bandage or brace will also help reduce some of the swelling. More than that though it's going to help provide a extra support to the injured joint and that's especially important when you start bearing weight on it.

Elevation: when you're sitting put you're foot up in a chair, not only will the this help reduce swelling, which in turn reduces pain, it will also take weight off the joint. Try to keep it elevated above your heart when ever possible. The easiest way to do this when you're sleep is to stick a pillow under the foot of your mattress. This will keep the mattress elevated and the pillow isn't going to move.

In general after about a 1-2 weeks (unless the sprain is more severe) you'll be able to bear weight on the injured ankle and if you're like me think it's okay to start resuming you're normal activites. It's not. Keep wearing the brace to give the joint the extra support it needs while it heals. Gradually get back into your normal physical routine because otherwise you're just going to re-injure the joint and it's going to take even longer to heal. When you're ankle starts hurting that's a good indication you're pushing too fast and too far, just ease off a little. Also once you're able to do so there a few stretching exercises that will help. The most common one being to trace the alphabet with your foot.

Hope this helps, and trust me when I say give yourself plenty of time to heal. Otherwise you'll learn to regret when you're older.

It might take a couple of days depending on how bad the sprain is. It could even take a few weeks. If it's your ankle and it's not too bad of a sprain I would say two weeks.
