A gift certificate for portraits of the baby. Sears or somewhere other than Walmart.
Or if you can find a service near you that does a cast of the babies hands or feet, we had that done and it so wonderful to look back and see what size they used to be!

If you are trying to just get a gift for the baby then maybe just get a savings bond, because that will help them in the future. If you are trying to get a gift that will help the parents out in the middle of the night. Get newborn gowns they are called. You can get them at Walmart. They are kinda like a dress with elastic at the bottom, they make diaper changing a breeze in the middle of the night!!

Books , On the day you were born, love you forever, beatrix potter sets, winnie the pooh sets-not Disney books but the actual AA Milne series, Paddington Bear. Even newborns can be read to.

Pretty Lullabye cds.

Stock in Disney or some other toy company. A bank account with a savings bond in it , you can add to it every birthday, Christmas/Hannukah etc.

A lovely cuddly stuffed toy not too small but not too large either for baby to cuddle and love. It doesn't have to 'do' anything, except get gnawed on and loved.

A card with an explanation of your gift for mom.

Your gift - go over and watch the baby (and other kids if there are any) for an hour or 2 so mom can have a nap, bath, catch up on errands without baby, whatever mom wants to do.....

A gift certificate for mom to go for a facial, massage, haircut, mani/pedi. (and you watch the child/ren while she goes).

Or offer to clean house, do laundry, grocery shop for mom.....

Why is this a gift for the newborn?
A happy mom is a good (or better) mom!!!

A gift basket (you can get it at walmart) that has shampoo and lotion and stuff for the baby on both of my kids I received clothes and toys for my newborn but those shampoos and lotions are expensive. Oh and try the one that says 'bedtime bath' (johnson and johnson)my newborn loved it! It really did seem to calm him (and me) down after I gave him a bath he would dose off as soon as we got out.....

The daddy will like it too!! Also a gift certificate to a take out place so the new parents can have dinner without cooking...But for the baby...handmade blankets!! they keep forever and mean so much to the baby and the parents! also, cute storage bins! babies have so much stuff it is so hard to organize! and you can fill the bins with goodies for the baby and mom! I loved all the bath soap and lotions i got for the baby! lavendar soap for babies is like a drug it really puts them to sleep! i still use it to this day! hope this helps!

Lots of wipes, receiving blankets, bibs, and if mom is going to nurse get her breast milk bags for freezing her breast milk or just to have on the go. Burlington's Coats has a baby section with very cute baby products and
reasonable price.

For baby showers, I always set up a care package for the mother. She worked hard bringing the baby into the world and now the baby is her world. It is easy for the mother to forget to care for herself and the last thing baby needs is for mom to burn out!
The care package has practical things, such as brush and comb, nursing pads, menstruation pads, mild soap, body lotion, warm socks, and chocolates. I add a small item for the baby in the care package as well, such as a pacifier or blanket.

I was recently baby-stuff shopping and discovered that FTD.com has these cute little bouquets made of onsies, etc. It cost $49.99, but I thought the concept made it worth it. A special gift for mom and baby!!
