Remember, they originally wanted Travolta for that role, too.

Between SNF and Urban Cowboy, he suffered some emotional setbacks which prevented him from being the American Gigolo.

no, American Gigolo was not a good movie to begin with and Saturday Night Fever had everyone yearning to go to a disco. I dont think anyone yearned to be a male prostitute! HA!

I don't know about 'emotional setbacks' but between SNF & American Gigalo was a little movie called 'Grease'. And the same time American Gigalo was being filmed, John Travolta was doing another 'little' movie called 'Urban Cowboy', which had its own multi-million selling soundtrack! Believe or not, or maybe you'll remember, Giorgio Moroder's soundtrack to 'American Gigalo' sold a couple million units as well, led by the number one theme song 'Call Me' by Blondie. Ironically, John Travolta DID beat out Richard Gere for the movie version of GREASE, as Richard did Grease on Broadway in the early 70s. The popularity of tv's John Travolta 'coupled' with the music of The Bee Gees is what sold the soundtrack so well. The Bee Gees wrote 5 songs in 4 days for the soundtrack at the last minute and the rest was 'history'. Other info: When the producer called up Barry Gibb (Bee Gees) and asked him to write a song called 'Grease' for the upcoming movie, Barry replied 'what was that?' and again he said 'Grease'. Dismayed, Barry said NO and hung up the phone. 30 minutes later, he calls Alan Carr (the producer) back and says 'How about 'grease is the word'?' and the rest of that was history as well. :-)

I think it should be the other way around. The movie became popular because of the soundtracks. The story plot of the movie is simply bland, except for the few scenes where John Travolta and others showed their dancing prowess on the screen. Had the movie used other soundtracks, I doubt that it can make the impact that it had. Conversely, the songs used in the soundtracks would surely make their way on the top of the charts even without the movie.
