Ferrets hunt rabbits naturally in the wild so they don't need to be taught how to hunt. Ferrets don't hunt rabbits in the same way as a dog. A dog will chase a rabbit across a field, they have to catch it up to kill it. Ferrets go down rabbit holes to hunt. The idea is to catch a rabbit while it is sleeping or caring for its young. If the rabbit knows there is a ferret in the warren it will bolt out of the nearest exit to escape. Nets placed over the rabbit holes prevent the rabbit from getting away. In some cases a ferret will catch a rabbit sleeping and kill it underground. Rather than bring it out into the open, the ferret might decided to eat it underground. After a good lunch your ferret may decided a light snooze is in order, and where better to sleep than a nice safe rabbit warren. Ferrets can happily sleep 18 hours a day which either means you loose your ferret, or you may have to spend a long time digging it out, all because a ferret instinctively knows what to do!

ferrets dont instictively hunt rabbits when they are born. they need teaching. BUT they do have a natural instinct to hunt and be inquisitive so when put down a rabbit hole they do usually go down to investigate the new smell. they can be taught by feeding them rabbit from a young age(its a good idea to leave the fur on). then they know the smell and taste so are more likely to hunt them. all animals are born with natural instincts but most are learned from the parents. even wild stoats and weasels learn from their mum.

Being carnivores, ferrets will also hunt and kill other rodents. They were used as "ratters" in ancient Egypt before cats came into the picture. They have been used as hunters for a long time (they have been domesticated longer than the cat or dog)...they may also try to hut snakes and small game like that. Rabbits are a bit big, but ferrets think they are huge...

Black footed ferrets in the wild live solely on Prairie dogs.. and they fight hard to win the battles!

My ferret once got into my hamster cage and killed it with one bite and looked at me like "Look mom.. look what i saved you from!!!" She was so proud!!!

They do it naturally, but take a shovel with you, sometimes they will get themselves stuck down the rabbit warren! You should have a location collar on a ferret and a handset for yourself, to make it easier to find your ferret. Sometimes they decide to have a meal whilst in the burrow, then they eat so much they fall asleep, you then need the handset and shovel !
