Oh yes, yes yes!!!!! Not my grade, but somehow socially. I remember in high school during my freshmen year, I used to wear just regular fit jeans and buttoned shirts. I got treated like i was a real smart kid. For instance, there was this time when a teacher who stated that I was doing a great job in class and other kids were doing a bad job, because they were talking. But the thing is, I was also talking and messing around. Now it came to 2 yr of high school, when i kind of changed my style. I started hanging around with urban kids and started to wear "ghetto" style clothes, like long t-shirts, big baggy jeans, etc.....And MAN!!! Just ask me about how many times I got pulled over by the security. I behaved the same way i did in my freshmen yr. Teachers started doubting my intellect, whenever i got a good grade, they asked my oral questions to verify i did not cheat. I did not go through this kind of treatments from teachers when i was a freshmen. So, yes appearance makes a BIG DIFFERENCE! HOW SAD!

Teachers should not be as judgemental but I have to admit in UK schools nobody really bothers. Guess why. ;)

I think there is nothing wrong with expecting people to dress neatly for school. There definitely is no need for school uniform in my opinion, but I don´t know why anybody would wear fishnet tights, hotpants, stilettos and a cleavage from here to Mexico top to school. Just doesn´t feel right. It´s a place to live, yes - but mainly a place to learn. You can´t turn up in an outfit like that in a job interview - seize the opportunity for dressing less neat while you´re still going to school, but don´t overdo it.

To add to this, I´d say that your behaviour in school influences the way teachers (rsp. people in general) treat you a lot more than your "style". :)

PS: Emokids complaining? ;) Nah sorry, just kidding.

In general, I think teachers don't really care about your fashion sense. If you are giving a presentation, some teachers will pay attention to whether you have made an effort to look professional. You can ask for grading criteria, and if it's not mentioned on the list, query your teacher.

I am a mother and when I was in school teachers did judge us. Back then if you wore a mini skirt and a tank top the teacher would be *mean* and lower your grade. When my daughter goes to school NOW that did happen once. She wore a mini skirt and a sleveless t-shirt and the teacher lowered here grade. I talked to the school principal and the teacher was fired. But after that no teacher has ever treated my daughter that way.

maybe not in grades, but i remember being hurt when a teacher said to a fellow student something about how they looked the part while i didn't. just because his family had enough money to make the difference. this was in a time when a couple of $200 made a difference. as it says, there is nothing new under the sun.

My Girlfriend has a nose piercing and she is a assistant Principal at a school in Wilmington NC. She has gotten repeated requests from the Superintendent to remove it! But they have no policy on it so she refused! Just to let you know it is not always the teacher that makes that call...... If you can email me the project because I know she would love to see it!

yes.. I have been judged by a teacher on what I wore! I was called a wh*re and wether or not she purposely meant to say those excat words she did! she told me if I didnt stop wearing short skirts and revealing tops I would end up preganant before I was a sophomore (2nd year) in high school! she also judged many of my friends! she had hinted around to me many times before about talking (JUST TALKING NOT EVEN FLIRTING) to boys and wearing the clothes I wear! I ignored her but when she called me a whore in front of the whole classroom while it was dead silent and she was screaming at me.. I had had enough.. I ran out of the classroom crying! this has been a little over a year ago and she still hasn't apoligized! If I hadn't have been on school grounds I wouldve punched the crap out of that old woman! her exact words were "(My name) You dress like a whore.. you are going to be preganant before you become a somphomore.. just like your sister" she had never met my sister before and to judge me, but especially my sister some she had never met before like that.. I shouldve attacked her.. many teachers told her she needed to quit calling her students names.. and many offered to go tell on her.. but I figured what goes around comes around and if she ever says one word to me that is rude again I will knock her flat off her feet no matter where we are and say a few choice words to her! My sister was a senior in highschool when she got preganant and it was one mistake! nobodys perfect.. but you dont have to call students names! my grades went down in this class! way down.. I would have a's in all my other classes and c's in hers.. I think that is very wrong and she should be fired! but what can I do I am only a student.. thanks for asking this question.. this might've been a little to much... but I can finally let all my steam out!.. thanks so much.. I hope noone ever has a teacher like that! it's horrible!

honestly some teachers might do this to kids, i mean if you show up to school everyday wearing a shirt that shows your belly and short skirts or tight pants some teachers automatically think your not smart. no it probally doesnt affect our grades, remember, they cant' lie to us! i think thats a great project. by they way if you need to know my age im 14 so i know cuz sum teachers do that to me

Some teachers are judgemental. Heres a good example:

One time I wore my hair all messed up and ugly looking and my teacher saw me and she looked at me disgusting and when she said sit down....she showed us our grades and I make aa 56 in her class...I'll never do that again.....

They shouldn't but if you think this is going on you should tell someone cause that's not fair. I was judged like that in my Speech Competition the gave me a bad ribbon because ( on judge) wrote on the comments that I was a write headband with a green dress.
