I used to have the original, but the CD broke and I lost the jewel case. Anyway, I was going to buy another one, but before I do: these new expansion pack games (University, Pets, Vacation, etc) would I need to have the original Sims downloaded onto the computer?

Yes you have to have the original Sims CD to play the game. That must first be installed on your computer, and then you may add expansion packs. The most recent expansion pack you install will be the CD you have to insert into your computer to play the Sims. If you install the Sims 2, Pets, then University, you would have to insert the University CD to play.

This is partly true. If your friend has it you may be able to borrow the sims 2 game and install it onto your computer. You do not need the disks to play if you have the expansion pack disks. I wouldnt recommend this though because if you for some reason need the disks you wont have them. I did this with my friend, she just has a couple of expansion packs and borrowed my original game to install first and then just play the game using the expansion pack disk. You can do this but i still think you should buy the game.

If it's the Sims1 expansion pack, such as vacation, then you need the original Sims 1 game.

If it's the Sims 2 expansion pack, such as University, then you need the original Sims 2 game.

You cannot play the expansion games without the original games.

You need the original Sims in order to play any expansion pack.

Yes, and that goes for basically all games. You need the original to play the expansion.

Well im pretty much sure you dont actually need it if you have it installed on your computer. But I think the installation process requires you to put the cd in to carry on the installation. \

I think if you look at your manual, maybe you'll be able to find a helpline and maybe they'll send you a new copy of the game if you return the broken one for a small price.

If the game is already installed then you don't have to worry about anything. Once you install the expansion pack, you'll use that cd to play the game.
