I am thinking about joining my high school track team, but I am not that fast of a runner. I want to join because I want to become more active. Do you have to 'make the cut' to be on the team? How does your school do it?
And please don't say to ask the school, if I did I wouln't be on here asking all of you.
Thanks!

Well last year in P.E. I ran a mile in 14 minutes.. but I wan't really trying. I was just running with my friends.
I thought that track helped you train to compete, and so you can excel.

Also, for like long distance runs you don't necessarly go fast.. but at a steady pace.
I haven't practiced running so I am going to train by running around my neighborhood. I am really unware on how good/or bad I am.

Well, running too slow could get you cut from tryouts, but really...if you're good at endurance running or the field events, you may not have to be a FAST runner. If you can do the high jump, or shot put or throw a discus etc....you may be a great addition to the track team.

Well normally they make you do all these drills (the entire team) to get y'all in shape so who knows? You might become a fast runner. They will see where your stregnths and weaknesses are, or if an athlete already specializes in something like the 100 meter dash, they will most likely get first dibs at that event. It sounds like you have a clean slate with track so try everything. Since you are not a fast runner, try the longer events like the mile or the 800 meter run...maybe you have good endurance. If running is really not your thing, try pole vaulting or discus. But track will DEFINITELY get you in shape if that's your main concern and if you do what you are supposed to.
After a few weeks, the coaches will want to see your area of interest in track so try everything and find what your best at. If the coaches think you are good, they will put you in that event. If not, they'll find something for you that may not be what you want, but it's what they think you could probably excel in.

Absolutely not! I run track at my high school, and while I'm not the slowest one out there I am definitely not fast. Like you, I run for exercise, and training. At my school, the sport is non-cut, so anyone can run, but making the team shouldn't be too difficult. As long as you're willing to run in horrible weather, and all of the time, you should be fine. I joined as as freshman, with no experience, and now I'm a (albeit slow) varsity runner. Good luck!

Normally you have to be fast to be on a track team. The whole point is to run fast and get in first place. If you would like to become more active I would suggest jogging around your neighborhood, get a tredmill, the gym, or try out for the soccer team. Ever since I started soccer in the sixth grade I have definitely gotten more acitve and am in shape... it might even help you get on the track team.
Thats the best advice I can give you. =] Hope it helped!!

well, in my school its like this:
You have to be a pretty good runner. Like you have to be good in at least one area out of the following-
-sprinting
-the mile run
-cross counrty running
Theres also things like the shotput and poll volting and stuff.
But yah, you have to be able to run the mile higher than 7 min and 30 sec. Otherwise your too slow. And with sprinting you have to be able to sprint the 100m 200m 500m and such. You have to be able to do those like in this order-
-100m: at least 20sec
-200m: at least 40sec
-500m: at least 1min and 20sec
if you cant do that, theres always poll volting which you have to use a stick and jump over a huge arch. Then there's shot putting where you have to take a 5 pound ball (for guys its 10 pounds) and hold it behind yur neck, they step and throw it as far as you can. Oh, and theres also long jump where you have to sprint along a strip of concret and launch yurself off a board into the sand where they measure how far you jumped. Well, hope this helped you...
see ya

But, it DOES depend on your school! If your school is highly competitive in track and field, you will not make the cut if you aren't fast. Some high schools are not very athletically motivated, and they will accept just about anybody that shows interest in the team. What sort of school do you attend? Even competitive schools will accept mediocre athletes, but they will spend a great deal of time on the bench.

Yes you have to run fast.
You have to make the cut. In my school they have a fitness club though. Inquire about that.
