Jihadists today invoke the Quran to justify the worst terrorist crimes. Throat slitting of infidels is mentioned in the Quran. Al-Mawardi (d. 1058), the prominent 11th century jurist quoted this verse, specifically, « When you encounter those who deny (the Truth) then strike (their) necks. » (Quran 47 :4), in his learned discussion of jihad. This ritual execution is also mentioned in other Muslim legal texts and in narratives of Christian and prominent Muslim historians. Today it is performed against infidels and recorded on videotape for the edification of Muslim audiences.

When the average pious Muslim reads a verse like 2:132 (“And this was the legacy that Abraham left to his sons, and so did Jacob; ‘Oh my sons! Allah hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the Faith of Islam’”) or 3:67 (“Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah’ (which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah”), he understands what so many imams tell him: that the true Jews and Christians of today are the Muslims, and the people who go by those names are renegades and rebels against God.

This is of course nonsense.

"Jihad" may literally mean to "struggle in the way of God," but in a practical sense, it means a call to violence against non-Muslims. I am completely willing to accept that if one went into a public square in any city in the Arab world and shouted "Jihad! Jihad! Jihad!," the result would not be people marching off the the mosque to fight their inner struggles with accepting the will of Allah. People would come out, possibly armed, to show their disdain for local and far off non-Muslims, and Jews in particular. I expect that this hypothetical call to Jihad would incite Israeli flag burning and possibly vandalism to local non-Muslim owned property, and possible violence against individuals. "Jihad" is not a peaceful term, despite the assertions of apologists who take it out of context to avoid the clear implications. In actual practice, it means war.

Anyone who justifies "Jihad" is not just a dork, but a war mongerer and bigot agaist non-Muslims.

Jihad, basically means a "struggle in the way of God", connotes a wide range of meanings in Islam, from struggling to lead a good Muslim life, praying and fasting regularly, being a caring spouse and parent to working patiently to propagate Islamic beliefs. It also means to struggle to defend Islam from an enemy who attacks first. Jihad is a deeply rooted precept in the Islamic world. In fact it is sometimes referred to as the sixth pillar of Islam. Check it out.
