occasion. I am not talking about binge drinking and getting drunk. One standard drink if you were having a nice meal or if it was a special occasion or perhaps if you needed a stress relief?

IT HAS BEEN PROVEN, that 1 glass of wine or beer not more than 4 times a week DOES NOT harm the fetus. Usually, first time mothers do not drink any alcohol at all and expecting mother of 3 will drink more than that and won't be afraid... I have a glass of wine occasionally and there haven't been any problems, although later on it is been giving me pretty bad heartburn, so I think more before I actually have a drink.

I don't see anything wrong with an occasional glass of wine with dinner or to calm your nerves but, ask your doctor, every pregnancy is different and so is every woman.

And, for all of you out there who would persecute a pregnant woman with a glass of wine, remember that most of you were conceived because your mothers had too much to drink and more than likely drank up until the third month as early pregnancy tests haven't been around as long as you have. I AM NOT saying it is ok to 'drink' while you are pregnant. I am saying it is alright to have a drink of wine now and then IF your doctor agrees.

I also feel that only those who have carried around an extra human being in front of you for nine months should really be answering this one. After a while it feels like you are carrying around two human beings, fully grown, with sharp teeth and the will to kill you slowly. You really have to be there to understand why a glass of wine might be the saving grace at the end of some randomly painful and stressful day. Ask any father to be his opinion about this and you might get a whole different perspective.

When my sister was pregnant with her second child, her doctor told her 1 drink a night would not harm the baby. It helped to relax her. I'm not talking about shots of the hard stuff, just a glass of wine or maybe 1 wine cooler or a beer. But I wouldn't have more than 1 in a day.
If you think about some of the things some mothers do while pregnant (major drugs, getting plastered a lot, etc.) - and compare that to 1 drink a night - the 1 drink a night seems a lot milder and maybe not better for you and the baby, but far less harmful.

You have to be so careful..think about the final outcome. Not to be preachy or anything..but...I teach a little girl who's mother drank whilst pregnant. She has severe learning disabilities and has fetal alcohol syndrome.I'm sure her Mom had more than the odd tipple-however,ask yourself how you would feel if a fleeting feeling of stress relief or pleasure is worth a child's life?In France I know they suggest the odd glass of red wine and in the U.k a glass of guiness. In NOrth America we are more zero tolerance.I have had 3 kids and had the odd glass of wine-it did make me a bit nervous so as far as stress relief?I don't know. There are a lot of other things to drink if you are really desperate. It's only 9 months after all. What does your Dr. suggest? At the end of the day only you can decide...weigh the odds and decide what is most important to you..Best wishes for a healthy, happy baby.

Okay here is the thing, if you can't go 9 months without drinking it probably means that you have very little clue of what a "little bit" of drinking is. By this I mean that you will be totally unable to self control yourself and should just abstain.

Anyway talk to your doctor.

Prevention (of fetal alchohol syndrome)

Alcohol is a teratogen, and the only certain way to prevent FASD is to avoid drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Some studies have shown that small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy might not pose a risk to the fetus (for example, Abel, 1996; Day, 1992; du Florey et al., 1992; Forrest and du Florey, 1991; Goodlett and Peterson, 1995; Polygenis et al., 1998; Streissguth et al., 1994; Wilkie, 1997), although no amount of alcohol during pregnancy can be guaranteed to be absolutely safe. In the United States, the Surgeon General recommended in 1981 that women not drink while pregnant or while planning a pregnancy, the latter to avoid damage in the earliest stages of a pregnancy while the woman may not be aware that she has conceived. Congress passed legislation in 1989 that requires warning labels be placed on all alcoholic beverage containers.

It has not yet been determined exactly how much alcohol it takes to harm a fetus but wouldn't you think it is better to be safe than sorry? The risk is far greater than the reward. What will one drink do? You can relieve stress in other ways and drink other, non alcoholic beverages on special occasions.

My opinion is don't touch alcohol at all. When something is really important, I don't take any chances. The health of my baby would be the most important thing to me. It would be more important than stress relief or having a nice meal with drink.

Look, even if it is one drink your whole pregnancy, don't risk it. It's just 8-9 months. Once your baby is delivered, drink your occasional drink. As in 1 or 2 drinks every 6 months.

I know some doctors recommend a glass of wine after having an amnio. I think VERY moderate drinking (like, 4-5 glasses the whole pregnancy) is probably ok, but it's really something that needs to be discussed with your doctor.

Never ever. If you are stressed go for a walk. One does not need to drink alcohol during those short nine months.
