Watching a calf. That's what the person was doing. People watched how the cows fed the calf's and associated it with how female humans can feed children.
If your wondering why some one looked at a chicken and said "I'll eat the next thing that comes out of its butt." I can explain that too. They watched how animals like fox's and other predators ate eggs and decided to try it for them selves.

I've wondered that myself, on occasion. My best guess is that people realized that they had milk in their boobs too, or saw a baby cow suckling. Since cows give off more milk, it would make sense to use theirs instead of our own, giving the limited production of humans.
What really baffles me is the question of who the first mother to breastfeed was.

Because their young would suckle. Similar to berries, fruits, etc., if the birds and animals that eat them do not get sick or die, then the humans gave it a go. Except, can you imagine the first people arguing over who was going to eat the first egg, that fell out of a Hen's butt?
