what is a yeast infection?

Vaginal yeast infections are caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Yeast are tiny organisms that normally live in small numbers on the skin and inside the vagina. The acidic environment of the vagina helps keep yeast from growing. If the vagina becomes less acidic, too many yeast can grow and cause a vaginal infection. The acidic balance of the vagina can be changed by your period (menstruation), pregnancy, diabetes, some antibiotics, birth control pills and steroids. Moisture and irritation of the vagina also seem to encourage yeast to grow.

It's an overgrowth of yeast (called candida) in your body? Women get them primarily vaginally and more frequently and longer in duration than men. It's important to note exactly "where" you are having the yeast infection. If it is not vaginal then see a general practionaer. If it is vaginal I would see a gynecologist at least the first time. Afterwards you'll know what it is and most likely be able to treat it at home with Monistat or something. If you need something fast then spend the 15 to 20 bucks and get the Monistat 1 day (overnight treatment WITH the cream). It is more than worth it and will fix you up in no time but I would STILL see your doctor!

All women have a natural source of yeast in their vaginas. Sometimes, the yeast grows out of control and produces a white discharge. This is called a yeast infection. It will itch because it is a fungus and will make you red and inflammed. Go to the doctor if you think you have one so they can confirm it and treat you.

it's a build up of moisture in areas that don't get enough air. and it causes a cottage cheese look of discharge from the area and a rough smell. In the women's section of any department store, you can find medications to heal this issue and be s ure to wear breathable clothes. I know it's hard this time of year to do so, but when you are inside, try to air out.. take a bath and use baby powder or Gold Bond Medicated Powder on those areas once infection has cleared up. Monistat is the best brand for medication to clear it up. get on the healing now before it gets too deep.

feels like an intense itching, burning sensation, localized in your vagina and vulva. this itching is not always present, but can get really bad, so bad you can hardly walk, let alone ride your bike to the pharmacy or doctor to get it treated.
looks like clumpy nasty white stuff. most medical descriptions compare the discharge to ricotta cheese, but it can range from thick and not clumpy to faintly yellow to thin and clear.

smells like bread or beer. in fact, it smells pretty much exactly like yeast, although the yeast used in brewing and baking is an entirely different species (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). no bacteria could smell like that, so it's a great diagnostic.
