Yes, the Roomba can maneuver around and irregular room, and furniture. If your rooms are all interconnected and very large you may want to use the virtual wall to section off one room from the other. You might also make sure that you purchase the Roomba Discovery model or the Scheduler, because they have a max clean button which will allow the Roomba to run until the battery is drained, then the Roomba will return to the home base and charge for the next use. Under the normal clean cycle the Roomba will run until it detects no dirt or the battery looses charge, it will then return to the home base.
I have a very large, irregular floor plan in my basement. I have a couch, 2 desks, and various kids toys that don't move (play kitchen, etc.) and the Roomba does a great job. I use the max clean setting in my basement because the room is partly divided by the couch and I have found that the max clean mode allows for the best cleaning in a very large room. I just set the Roomba for max clean at night, and when I wake up the Roomba is on the home base fully charged and ready for use.
Sometimes, if the area in front of the couch just needs to be cleaned, like after my kids eat popcorn, I will use a virtual wall to section off that area of the room and I use the clean mode to clean the area.
P.S. My Roomba has great suction, and gets up more dirt than any other vacuum that I have ever owned. Just be sure to clean your brushes and filter for the best performance. iRobot makes a special cleaning tool that you can get for under $5.00, it makes cleaning the brushes a snap.

I researched the roomba, because I wanted one; my understanding was that it will cover open areas in a pattern, based on how you program it, and using the invisible 'walls' that you can set up...it will probably work but will take longer....like you'll probably have to treat "areas" like "rooms" and do them individually, if your space is very large....it may overlap repeatedly on some spots, and take a while to get around to others. I think they took into account the idea of irregular spaces when designing it. It should be able to work around obstacles, but may take some trial and error to get it to work for your space. Good Luck.

Wow! I'll be getting my dog soon and the block off portion of the house she'll be staying in does have a vent. Right now we're dog proofing the space so I'll make sure that blocking off the vents or removing her collar is on the list! Thank you so much. All those little ifs and buts seem impossible until they happen!

Save your money. I have a Roomba and yes it picks up surface stuff pretty easy. But it has no suction to get dirt that is down in the carpet.

Not sure, but thought I might make a poitn that if you get one and you have a pet, make sure the two are never together unsupervised. If the pet gets sick or something your going ot have to shampoo the carpeting.
