I understand John Major, former PM, came from a circus family, but maybe that's a myth. It would be entertaining if it were true; the only man to run away from the circus to become an accountant and then a politician!

No, but I know of a few clowns who left the circus to go into politics

No, but. . .

. . .my grandfather's family actually moved away while he was 14 years old and away at work. He came home and didn't know where they had gone.

He was a teamster, an actual teamster in the true sense of the word - he drove a team of mules back in the days before most people had cars. He was gone about a week and when he returned his family had left. The good news is that the neighbors told him where they'd gone. Weird. So instead of him running away, it was his family that ran.

My uncle's brother in law did exactly that - he ran away and joined Billy Smarts, where he went by the name of Smokey Senior. He was not in any of the acts but put up and maintained the big top. We visited him once in his caravan and I was amazed by his long hair and earrings - this was about 1963.
