What am I compensating for, if anything?

You have the urge because wealthy/famous is where it's at for you. You don't have to be compensating for anything. If you want to be wealthy I would suggest getting compensated.

No, you are not compensating for ANYTHING. This is the way society has conditioned us to think. Do you notice how Hollywood stars get all the best treatment, but everyone else gets nothing. You just want a better life for yourself, and the urge to be wealthy and or famous is just a gateway to a 'better' life, if you get my drift. :)
