Hi! I'm a 14 year-old male and I need to learn to do the splits for my dance routine. I have plenty of time to practice I think. Today is 1/16/07 and my dance is on 5/16/07. But I need to learn as soon as possible so I can keep practicing with my team. I have tried and tried to go as low as I can but that method just won't work. I've tried for about 2months straight and I have no progress. I really really need to learn. I want to learn the fastest but safest way. Please HELP me!

The splits are all about loosening up the muscles in your inner thighs, if you do a light warm up then sit in straddle with your legs as wide as they can go and hang out there for a while every day, you will find that you will be able to go lower in the splits. You should never try to stretch cold muscles though you could tear something. If you can't manage to do a warm up first take a hot bath to loosen the muscles. You can also lie on your back with your legs extended up a wall, with your butt touching the wall. Then open your legs and let gravity help you stretch. The hardest part here is bringing your legs back together after staying there 5 min or more. With practice there is no reason you shouldn't be able to go into splits.

Be careful!! remember to stretch out for at least 30 sec. while trying to use other parts of your hamstring. I once did the splits at the end of a hip-hop routine and ended up in the emergency room cuz i pulled almost every muscle in my leg, no to mention tendons and stuff. If i were you, i would ask an instructor for the best ways, or just try to stretch in different positions for a long time, reverting back to the splits after every few minutes

Stretch, stretch, and then stretch some more. Hold stretches for 5 minutes, relax for 2 minutes, then stretch for another 5, at least twice a day.

there may be no safe way for you. everyone's body is different. and while i believe in reaching full potential, i don't think every way is safe for everyone. keep trying for your goals, but don't kill yourself for them. also you say your 14. your body isn't done growing yet. it might take longer than a few months to get there. is this what you want or is it for someone else?

I would reccomend talking to your gym class teacher he or she can help you and guide you in the safe way of doing it.

Have your dance instructor show you how, so you don't pull anything.
