Indie isn't a genre. Indie simply refers to an artist without major record label backing / distribution. The first indie band would be the first band who recorded ever, as they would be without a major label.

Ogg and the Caveman refused to buy into the whole grunting in unison while pounding on a stone corporate sound. He used howls and an early form of reed flute. Sadly, his life was cut short by drug addiction and a Saber-tooth tiger attack.

Indie is not a genre , merely a description of the supposed independence of the group from the major record label. Many groups could claim the title depending on how you define "indie" and what genre you use punk, grunge, bluegrass, caveman
