Subtract 48 from both sides:
x^2-13x-48=0
(x+3)(x-16)=0
x=-3 and 16

2007-01-16 10:55:21 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 4 0

x^2 - 13x - 48 = 0
(x - 16)(x + 3) = 0
x = 16 or x = -3

x^2 - 13x -48
(x-16)(x+3)=0

x-16=0 x+3=0

x = 16 and x = -3

x^2 -13X -48 = 0

ax^2 +bx+c = 0
find 2 numbers that its sum is b and multipication is a*c
the numbers are -3 and 16
16 + (-3) = -13 = b
16 * (-3) = -48 = c

so the equation can be written as :

(x-16)(x+3) = 0

which means that the solutins are 16 and -3

move everything over to one side:
x²-13x-48 = 0
then factor:
(x-16)(x+3) = 0

set each factor equal to 0
