State secrets are items of knowledge that if passed to enemies of the state (some other countries, or terrorist groups) could harm the country.

An example of a state secret might be that "MI6 is currently observing Mr Hamid Ogunlaja of 66 Festing Road, Putney, on suspicion of terrorist planning". If this knowledge became known to Al Qaeda they could move him to another address, which would make it more likely that he could be stopped from launching the attack.

Another example of a state secret is the range of the Polaris nuclear missiles, or other offensive weapons we have.

I think some elements of the Dunblane Investigation have been declared off limits for 100 years.
As state secret is I think information that the state decides should not be spoken of or known widely. One reason given for this is the asumption that widespread knowledge would lead to a significant level of social 'unrest' endangering all or a specific person. I think you are allowed to know that the information exists but not what it is. Sometimes I guess you don't even know that.
If you know something that is a state secret you have to sign the 'Official Secrets Act' paper promissing you won't tell anyone.

Yes, but I signed-up to the Official Secrets Act.

I'll leave you a note, and you can read it in 50 years time.

Espionage - most big countries and some big companied do it.
They are after strategic corporate, military & criminal information, and they want it asap (ideally in time to prevent a major attack from happening).
