A prefix is added to the the beginning of a word to change the meaning in some way. Examples:

Bi-plane: The prefix is "bi," and it refers to a plane with two sets of wings.

Uncool: The prefix is "un," and it's "not cool."

A suffix is added to the end of a word to change the meaning in some way. Two examples:
"ful" and "ness" as in "helpful" or "darkness."
