Free land. All they had to do was homestead it and it was theirs.

The opportunity to claim free land: there was all this open empty land out west and the government made it available to just go and grab what you wanted to farm or ranch or whatever. It was the chance for a new life, and to chase the American dream. Also, "Manifest Destiny" played a part-- American's belief that it was our destiny to reach the Pacific Ocean and tame the wild land out west. Then of course there was the problem of overcrowded cities. With the population growing there was no way to go but west.
