You need to isolate the variable, and you have to do the same on each side, so you divide 6 by 6 then 9 by 6 and the quotient of 9 divided by 6 equals x

You have y as the variable, so what you would do is try to find what times 6 equals 9. The actual equation is 6 x [y] = 9. To find out what your variable (y) is, you would need to divide 9 by 6.

9-6=3 because you have to get y by itself, so you -6 from each side. Then divide: 9/3= 3 so Y=3

Think of it as
6*y=9 (6 times y equals 9)
So if you want to find y, divide both sides by 6.
