Good question. The void itself holds a different meaning in taoist and buddhist thought. There might be answers there if not in the Bible.

Chaos.

In Greek religion, anyway.

I don't remember the name in Egyptian mythology, or Babylonian mythology. Many myths start with swirling waters or a big egg.

I don't remember the big mud swamp in Cherokee religion, either. And I just read about it a couple of weeks ago.

Oh, well.

The answer is: nothing.

There was nothing.

Then, there was something. And from that something came everything else. And it got names.

However, how the nothing turned into something is speculated by many, discussed, and fought over.

Be content to call it nothing. And don't worry about how it came to be something.

Rather, take that something and work with it.

Funny I remember asking my dad this same question, he pointed to the encylopedias, fornately for you the Internet is a vast pool of knowledge. I did a term paper on this for my Minor in Science so I still have some of the better pages in my favorites.
First and foremost is...http://www.perfecttruth.com/PartThree_INTELLIGENCE.html
Second because it is a bit less informative but it mentions the Chaos therory. http://www.conegallery.net/chaos2.htm and well it had to be a balance thesis so I also put in the theological view of the creation of the universe....http://cscs.umich.edu/~crshalizi/White/creation/visible-universe.html

Reminds me of a joke my late brother used to tell me...

A man was standing beside God and asked him a few questions..."God how long is a century for you?" God replied, "About a minute"
Hummm...the man asks another question..."How much is a billion dollars to you?" God replies "About a dollar"
Getting braver with each question the man chances one last one..."God?, Can I borrow a dollar" to which God responds.."Sure, just a minute"

The exordium is that moment between nothing and something, it is my all time favorite word and concept.
