Medusa is also known as "the angry woman" and the whole bit about turning people into stone if they look at her is similar to what happens to a man when he looks at the woman he just enraged with something stupid he said or did.
When a woman is in a rage, she can act like Medusa in a psychic way. When the man looks at her, he is shocked and scared at the same time, thus he cannot move.
This is the legacy of Medusa.

Medusa is just one of the three sisters that are called Gorgons. Unlike her other two sisters, Medusa was the only Gorgon that can be killed. Medusa has snakes for hair and was so ugly that one look from her can turn anyone into stones. The only way that you can see her is by her reflection.
Her head was chopped off by perseus (with the help of Athena) as a gift to king Polydectes (of course, Polydectes tricked Perseus to get the Gorgon head so that he can get rid of perseus and marry His mother, Danae). Perseus, used the head to turn Polydectes and his court to stone, thus saving his mother. Pereus gave the Head to Athena, the Goddess of wisdom, which she placed in front of her shield.
One interesting fact about The blood of Medusa. From her blood sprang the winged horse pegasus and the hero Chrysaor.

One of the Gorgons, and the only one who was mortal. Her gaze could turn whoever she looked upon to stone. There is a particular myth in which Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden. She desecrated Athena's temple by lying there with Poseidon. Outraged, Athena turned Medusa's hair into living snakes.

Medusa was killed by the hero Perseus with the help of Athena and Hermes. He killed her by cutting of her head and gave it to Athena, who placed it in the center of her Aegis, which she wore over her breastplate.

From Medusa's dead body the giant Chrysaor and the winged horse Pegasus, her son by Poseidon, sprang forth.
