Carter's problems were many. The economy collapsed as inflation went through the roof. He had problems delegating authority to others and this slowed down his administration as he had to decide on every issue. The Iranian hostage situation and the failed attempt to free them was the straw that broke the back of most Americans. Carter's biggest problem though was he was negative. Americans wish to believe that better days are just around the corner, even if they are not, Carter told us we must sacrifice and suffer, Reagan offered hope and prosperity, this is why he won and Carter lost.

Inflation was out of control and more importantly, he was blamed for the hostage crisis in Iran. He was one of those Presidents that came into office at a very bad time and he paid the price, fairly or not.

Doesn't anyone remember the taking of the hostages at the US Embassy in Iran and the subsequent botched rescue mission?

Add to that the stagflation (that's high unemployment with high interest rates) and it spelled both a domestic and foreign policy disaster.
