Sounds like you might have a poor fitting saddle. Is it a raw spot?? or is it weeping out liquid??

ok, is it swollen and warm to the touch?, if it is it could be an abcess.

draining of an abcess is a good thing. You want to take a warm rag, make sure it's clean, and hold it over the wound. This will help loosen the puss. If your horse will let you, squeeze it and see what all comes out. if it's thick and smelly, you've got an abcess. If thats the case, I'd call a vet. Only because you'll need antibiotics that you can't get from the store. Most likely the vet will give you something to wash the wound with and they may give you a paste antibiotic, kinda like a wormer, or they'll come out and give the horse a shot.

You want to look around your horses pasture and see if there are any nails sticking out of wood, or any sharp pieces of wood you horse can rub on. Even tree branchs. You know how they are, if they get an itch where they can't reach, which is pretty much anywhere, they'll find a way!

good luck!!

fistulous withers is a pretty extreme diagnosis!! Not to mention it's very rare. I'd stick with the abcess. It's not a horrable thing, it can lead to one if it's not treated properly. But your horse will be fine. My mare got one on her hind quarters, doing who knows what. I kept it cleen and made sure it kept draining, got antibiotic and she was fine. The sore healed up in a weeks time.

Are you speaking approximately his withers or the muscle groups merely on the two ingredient (trapezius)? If the withers themselves are sore, the final element you're able to do is rub them, by way of fact the explanation they are sore is from stress (the withers are the dorsal methods of the 4,5,6 variety of, thoracic vertebrae, and are lined by utilising basically an enormously skinny masking of dermis, with the spinal chord working in the path of the middle of the vertebrae.) If the withers are sore, you may recheck your saddle in good shape, making particular the clearance is a minimum of four inches whilst your not in the saddle. you may could exchange saddles or detect a padding equipment that will advance your saddle. If it is the muscle groups on the two ingredient that are sore, then you certainly besides mght could verify the saddle in good shape, as stress factors there are undemanding and could basically worsen, and could effect in substantial u.s. behaviour issues. He might want time without work, too, if he's that sore marvelous now. discover an experienced and knowledgeable saddle in good shape guy or woman.

Put some kind of disinfectant on it every day possibly twice a day. After it starts to heal over and scab you can put bag balm and/or petrolium jelly on it to help it heal faster and help the hair grown back quicker. I'm no vet, but I have had to use this method a few times. If it's just a cut or sore sport from your saddle or something like that then this should work. If it's from something else like a disease possibly this might not work.

Well what you should have done frist would be to call your vet. I would NOW highly suggest you call your vet and have him look at the sore and see if the horse is alright! But, if you dont want to you can call your vet and ask for suggestions. Or if you perfer to not mess with the vet you can go to Tractor Supply, or where ever a place carries horse things and get the cut and heal medicne. I have used that on my horse a few times and It works + it stops any bleeding.

Good Luck and hope everything works out!!!

I would try hosing or sponging it and then clean it out with hydrogen peroxide, this will bubble and fizz. When the fizzing stops put some sort of antibiotic cream on it such as triple antibiotic ointment that you would put on a person. Try that, if it doesnt heal have a vet come look, the most important thing is to keep it clean to prevent infection. Also make sure that your horse isnt doing anything that could prevent the injury from healing, such as scratching it. good luck!

When I was a sprout, My horse got that from a poorly fitted saddle. My vet declared it was brucelosis, as my horse was boarded with goats. which he said were carriers. I knew it wasn't as he said, but was out of the area, and by then communicating by phone. Anyway, by the time I could get back home, my horse was better, it was a fistulous wither, and the vet had treated him with massive, and dangerous amount of antibiotics, hoping to get rid of the brucelosis that the bloodwork kept telling him that the horse never had. My horse died of the complications of antibiotic overdose, and the vet was committed to a psychiatric facility..(not related to my horse's treatment)
Anyway, my horse had a bruise from a saddle, and had rubbed it on low sappy branches, and it caused a massive sore on his withers..

This horse needs to see a vet. If you don't get the horse treatment and someone sees your poor horse you could be charged with animal cruelty for not providing vet care, and possibly loose your horse. Any large sore or one that is infected (ie. pus) need professional treatment.

Dude, and dudes who've answered so far, seriously, this is baad. It's called fistulous withers. Will add links at the end for you to read, as I'm not a vet, so they tell it better, causes and description at least. You need to get this horse to a vet, as this will very likely require surgery, and definitely needs proper medication under the supervision of an experienced horse vet.

I hope you aren't still riding him while it heals. Was it caused by a poorly fitting saddle and pad?
Try Cut-Heal by Cutter. I swear by it. If the sore is oozy, cleani t with peroxide, then pat it dry. Apply Cut-Heal and then dust plain old pickling lime over it - will keep away flies.

don't ride it for a while. That is where you put your horn at on your saddle and it rubs it. If you want to ride it though than I would just put some padding on it and comfort it a while.
