I would like to know the minimun security I should have for web browsing, email, messenger etc. Also, are there places I can get the security free until I decide what security suite I want to purchase? It is for a brief time only. Thank you in advance.

You should have at minimum:

1: a firewall. If you connect through a router it may already have one built in; if not, you want one and only one firewall on your computer. Some good free firewalls are available from http://www.jetico.com
http://www.comodo.com
http://www.zonelabs.com

2: an antivirus program. Again, you only want one activ e on your computer. Some good free antivirus programs:
http://www.avgfree.com
http://www.avast4home.com

3: antispyware programs. In this case, more is better -- different AS work different ways and no one catches everything. I recommend:
http://www.safer-networking.net (Spybot Search & Destroy)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com (Ad-Aware SE)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com (SpywareBlaster)

4: Keep your operating system and software patched with the latest security updates. I post periodic alerts about security updates and threats at http://helpmemike.livejournal.com

5: Use sensible precautions: don't click on attachments or links in email you aren't expecting, even if they appear to come from someone you know.

The least you should get is a firewall program, and an anti-virus program. Others such as things that have to do with spyware removal, spam email filtering, etc. are good to have too. If you go to www.download.com , they have a huge section on all kinds of stuff like that, some are free trials of programs you pay for, and some are actually 100% free, and work very well. Personally, I use Norton Internet Security 2006, which is paid for, and then Ad-Aware is what I use for anti-spyware, which is an example of what you can get from the site above. IMO, Ad-Aware is very thorough in its scans, and very reliable, better than some products you pay for. I hope this post helps, good luck.

Go there, shows all of their security stuff, and has review from other users so you can pick what is likely best for you.

First and foremost: Make sure that your operating system is up-to-date. Assuming that you're using Windows this means: Turn automatic updates on, thus making sure your PC gets the monthly security patches released by Microsoft.

Firewall: The Windows firewall is good enough for most cases.

Antivirus: AVG (-> http://free.grisoft.com ) or avast! (-> http://www.avast.com ) are decent free antivirus programs.

Spyware protection: Windows Defender (-> http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx ) ties in nicely with the operating system and protects your PC from all kinds of nasty spy- and adware.

at the very least:

1st... you should make sure your OS is up-to-date... especially if you have windows xp... you should have SP2 (service pack 2) installed along with all the other updates that were released after that.

2nd.. you should have a decent Anti-Virus program... you can get AVG Free Edition from here ---> http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free

3rd.. you should also have a good Anti-Spyware scanner/blocker... you can download "Ad-aware SE" / "Spybot Search & Destroy" / and "Spyware Blaster" from here --->

Ad-aware SE:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1

Spybot Search & Destroy:
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1

Spyware Blaster:
http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022_4-10486084.html?tag=lst-0-1

all 3 of these programs are free and safe to use... just make sure once you download and install them that you update them...

4th... if you are using Windows XP ... which most people should have by now... make sure you enable xp's built-in "Firewall"... here is how you do that: ---> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/security/winfirewall.mspx

.... there... with all this you should be pretty secure.....

enjoy! :D

You will need 2 things

1.)spyware protection, I suggest you get adaware se personal which is free at www.lavasoft.com

2.) Virus protection, I suggest Trend Micro's antivirus - PC Cillin, it is not freeware but it will take up the least amount of processor usage and will provide the most effective virus protection there is.

You need a software firewall, which WinXp provides and works well and you need an anti virus program. on the higher side one needs a hardware firewall (router) and malware software.

Free: Try AVG. (anti virus) and Spybot S&D.( Malware Scanner)
The later is verry effective.
