It consisted in striking hard and rapidly before the other side was organized. I worked particularly well against the smaller European nations that were still using WWI technology and tactics. The German tanks were more than a match for men on horseback.

Literally lightning war or flash war) is a popular name for an offensive operational-level military doctrine which involves an initial bombardment followed by employment of mobile forces attacking with speed and surprise to prevent an enemy from implementing a coherent defense. The founding principles of these types of operations were developed in the 19th Century by various nations, and adapted in the years after World War I, largely by the German Wehrmacht, to incorporate modern weapons and vehicles as a method to help avoid the stalemate of trench warfare and linear warfare in future conflicts. The first practical implementations of these concepts coupled with modern technology were instituted by the Wehrmacht in the opening battles of World War II. While operations in Poland were rather conventional, subsequent battles — particularly the invasions of France, The Netherlands and initial operations in the Soviet Union — were effective owing to surprise penetrations, general enemy unpreparedness and an inability to react swiftly enough to German offensive operations. That the German Army quickly defeated numerically and technically superior enemies in France led many analysts to believe that a new system of warfare had been invented

Hi there, I don't consider myself an expert on World War 2, but it is one of my favorite subjects and I know quite a bit. Here is what I know about Blitzreig: It means "Lightning War" they used brute force to smash through enemy lines and press on towards major cities usually by using Panzers ( tanks ). They would drop use paratroopers by dropping them in on strategic points ( Bridges, Railroads, ETC) the paratroopers jobs were to make sure the enemy didn't destroy the bridges/railroads as they retreated. By doing so they enabled the German army to move up to 50 miles per day while invading Poland and other countries.

It was effective because of one reason: the allies: Brits, French and Russians were tied to the static tactics of WWI with its trench warfare, etc. while the germans utilized mobile warfare using tanks in massed formations at the point of attack. The allies used their tanks in 'penny packets'. During the later stages of the war, the allies finally adopted their own blitzkrieg tactics after many hard earned lessons during the Battle of France and initial stages of Operation Barbarossa.
