I went to my local DVLA office and said "I need to tax my car next month and I havent had the log-book for it yet" Ive had the car for 4 months. I signed all the relevant papers( when I bought it) and as I understand it, the old owner(as the law states) sends the document off and I get sent the new one, the DVLA has just spent millions of pounds(TV ads etc) telling all sellers of cars IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY to tell them of this change in ownership. I was told that I would have to fill out a form and pay £19 for the log-book, I told them to shove the form and I am not paying £19 for the right to tax my own car, that I bought according to the law!! Who else thinks DVLA are a bunch or W@NKERS! and change the goal posts to make even more money?????

IVAN - I tried to tell them this but they insisted that I have to pay £19 for the administration costs of printing out the new document, if I dont pay I CANT get a new tax disk, I am really, really pissed off, they are holding me to ransom and I think I should get in touch with my local MP

Wow! That'll show them.

But you'll end up paying. One way or another.

Hello,

(ANS) The ownership of the vehicle documentation i.e. registered keeper & details should be, & remains free as far as my understanding goes. You are the new owner of the vehicle and as such you are the new owner of the log book to, I dont understand what you were being charged for?

I once lost my ownership documentation of my car so was unable to renew my road tax disk without it & I phoned up the DVLA and requested a replacement copy, this was sent by post to me in about 10days time. I had no problems at all with any part of the process, of course knowing how utterly beaurocratic government run departments can be you could have been told a whole load of complete non sense too (I could beleive that !).

The DVLA are charging you for a replacement Log Book, keep calm and focused. You need to write to the DVLA asking for an explanation of the charge you are being asked for, as they are making a charge to you Legally have to explain that charge. While you are waiting for them to reply, you write to the Department of Transport asking them how much it costs to register yourself as the new owner of a Vehicle. When the DVLA sent you some bullshit reply about the charge you send them a copy of the letter you got from the DPE, which will tell you it costs nothing. All others who have already paid the fee, write to the DVLA informing them you intend to claim the Fee back through the small claims Court and recover costs. You will get your money back the DVLA is pretending to itself that you are all asking to be re-issued with a Log Book you have already had. It will all end happily when it's discovered to be a Computer Error.

Well if you kept the new keepers slip you can tax from that.Old keeper might not have sent log book off? Too much gets taxed in this country, next we will get taxed on how often we sit in our front room.

I agree! A typical Governmet department...any way you can have it shoved up ya, they will do it. They think that no-one is going to complain about 'nineteen quid'. It is a relatively small sum...but it soon adds up. This government fu cking STINKS.
Up the REVOLUTION!
