probably when they figured out that glass breaks too easily and plexiglass is stronger than glass. but i dont know when. sorry.

A few players in the 70's broke backboards in the NBA. Daryl Dawkins of the 76ers did it a couple of times. Although exciting to watch, the NBA realized the danger to the players involved when shattering glass sprayed the court. The delay involved in replacing the basket was also timely. Those are some of the reasons why they made the move.

They had to fix the back boards when shaq came into the league. They name of the spring system in the basketball stands was actually named after shaq (dont remember name).
When shaq came into the NBA he broke so many backboards from hanging on them they had to change them.

i do not understand, yet you imagine they could have replaced it to at least some thing extra sturdy after shaq broke one into like a bajillion products. i wager it looks sturdy, and the ball bounces off it properly, so once you shoot the ball off the back board and it hits someplace in that small sq. on the backboard, probability is ninety 9% of the time, it truly is going to bypass in the basket.
