Meta is a prefix meaning: after; changed, higher.
Morphic: form

So it means (putting 2 and 2 together) a change in form.

Metamorphic Means

the previous posts are almost correct...but they miss a very important point.

To metamorphose does mean to change..and indeed metamorphic rocks are indeed rocks that existed as something else before (i.e a sedimentary rock, and igneous rock.. or even another metamorphic rock of a different composition) and then through the combination of pressure and/or temperature changes were modified in composition and/or texture into some grade of metamorhpic rock.
Now this is pretty much what everyone else said.. but what they forgot is that this change must happen without melting the rock. Once the rock is melted.. it becomes an igneous rock..
So metamorphism occurs over time through a variety of phase changes brought about by temperature and pressure changes without melting. Of course fluids can and are involved.

Literally it means exhibiting structural change in form (in the geologicl meaning of the word). Basically metamorphic rocks are those changed by heat and/or pressure from either sedimentary, metamorphic or igneous rocks to start with.
