First divide everything by 3 since that's a common factor, getting

x^2 - 4x - 12 = 0

Then do FOIL (x-6)(x+2) = 0

Then go from there

Factor out a 3:
x^2-4x-16=0

Use the quadratic formula:
x=-b±√b^2-4ac/2a
a=1,b=-4,c=-16
x=-(-4)±√(-4)^2-4(1*-16)/2(1)
x=(4±√16+64)/2
x=(4±√80)/2
x=(4±4√5)/2
x=2±2√5

It seems that the other answers are incorrect. If you divide by 3. It does not factor. The second person has it factored incorrectly. You should use the quadratic formula:

Good luck. Look up the quadratic formula on the internet and follow the algorithm.

3x^2-12x-48=0

Divide by 3.

x^2-4x-16 = 0

Use formula x= (-b +/- square root(b^2-4ac))/(2a)
where a=1, b=-4, c=-16.

x=(4 +/- square root(16-4*1*(-16)))/(2*1)
x=(4 +/- square root(16+64))/2
x=(4 +/- square root(80))/2
x=(4 +/- 4*square root(5))/2
x=2 +/- 2*square root(5)
x=2 + 2*square root(5) and x=2 - 2*square root(5)
