The federal government is responsible for the security of the nation, control of the currency and dealings with other nations. While there are others these should suffice.

"Important" is a difficult term -- I don't know what that means.
I guess I'd say it's more important because, in general, it's more powerful. The U.S. Constitution and the laws made thereunder, are the supreme law of the land. Thus, if Congress has authority to act, it can supercede a state law in a given area.
It's also more "important" because it's bigger. The Federal Government has more tax revenue and can undertake much larger projects (such as managing war or large entitlement and regulatory prgrams).
It's also more "important" because it's national. The federal government has the ability to change policy or law for all 300 million Americans; state governments only have authority within their borders (and only to the extent that the laws they pass are not preempted by federal regulations in specified areas.)
How's that?

because the Union (Republic) won the civil war in the 1860s

because if it wasn't there would be no American Republic or Federal government

because we are better off with one big country (Republic) than a bunch of smaller countries (states) because of greater ease in commerce and trade and better defense

((all of these things are arguable))
