Ok so I decided smoking 20 fags a day is turning into a joke! I decided to quit. After only one day I realised I cant go cold turkey cos believe it or not it was making me sick and weak, so I decided to cut down. Yesterday I smoked only 5 and today I have smoked 7, I have decided NO going over 10 for a few weeks then cut down more.

Do you think I have achieved something or am I weak?

I must say smoking less means I enjoy the ones I do smoke.

One less cigarette then the time before is always an achievement.

Statistics show that a person who has tried to quit smoking will generally fail the first 4 times out of the gate.

You really haven't made that commitment to yourself yet to say that YES this is the day, I smoke no more!

The only way to quit IS Cold Turkey.
The nicotine is out of your system within 72 hrs and your body is already returning to normal.
Cravings after that are just out of sheer habit. You can do it if you want too.

I am a former smoker ( i quit because of health reasons)
I recently watched as 3 of my friends have been diagnosed with lung cancer and brain cancer . There is a correlation between the two. Smoking contributed to their condition.

So try again until you get it right!

It's an addiction. Addictions are difficult for anybody to overcome. You are at least attempting to address the evil demom that posesses you. :-) Maybe keep cutting down the number of fags you smoke until the only one you smoke during the day is the best tasting one in the world! Do that once a day. It would be something to look forward to each day.

I'm the same - I don't think I could go cold turkey either. The idea is that if you don't give up altogether, then all you need is something to trigger you - stress etc - and you'd be back up to 20 a day. Saying that, though, isn't that the same as if you had given up completely.

I should give yourself a pat on the back. If you have set a goal, then stick to it, maybe reduce your limit to 9 in a couple of weeks and so on. We all have to deal with our addictions our own way and you sound like you are doing something you are comfortable with.

I smoked for over forty years and in 1998 I was given two options, quit smoking or die, I chose the latter of the two and stopped that same day, no patches no nothing just sheer willpower and the thought of leaving my four son's without a mum. It was the best thing I have ever done, it was very ,very hard but I just took it one day at a time and I beat the habit. !!

It's natural to feel sick if you quit cold turkey......your body goes thru withdrawal like it would with any drug... You have made an achievement, just the fact you want to quit and have cut back. Keep cutting back until you stop altogether.

Good Luck.

20 a day is a lot. If you can cut back to ten....bless ya! smoke ten for a few months and then try cutting to five........I just quit from smoking around five a day. I used to smoke more before that. Good luck!!

Actually, that's exactly the technique I used for quite a while now. I still haven't completely stopped, but I am far from the number of cigarettes I used to smoke.

I think you're achieving something, I know exactly what it feels like. You can be proud, hang in there!

I must say smoking less means I enjoy the ones I do smoke. " If this is your only finding". What sort of answer do you want? You,ve achieved nothing. " Give it up". That,s achieving.!
