Compared to a book store amazon.com is cheaper but they kill you with shipping costs, is this the best site to buy books?

I usually look through the new & used books that are available on Amazon from other sellers. You can get really nice books for really low prices. Even with shipping they're cheaper than actually going to a bookstore to get them. I once bought a brand new book for $1.00 plus whatever the shipping cost. I saved about $8.00.
Barnesandnoble.com also has books available through other sellers. You can find some great deals there too. Also check on Ebay.

If you know of a few different books you want, most books sold through amazon (not sellers) qualify for free shipping if you order over $24 worth of books, thus making shipping not an issue.

Also, if you buy really cheap books, like the ones selling for less than a dollar from sellers, shipping is only about $3.49.

Most places will not have cheaper shipping unless they're having sales. For example, overstock.com often has $1 shipping sales, but I'm not sure if there's an actual schedule as to when those sales are or if you just have to check the site frequently.

If you live anywhere near Harrisonburg, Virginia, though, I suggest you check out the Green Valley Book Fair. It sells remainder books at huge discounts about 6 times a year.

Barnes and Noble offers free shipping with $25 worth of books. But yes sometimes (not always) Amazon is cheaper.

I have a B&N customer card and get an additional 10% off each purchase, that and the no shipping are hard to beat.

Amazons selections of PC games are more extensive and they sometime have a better price. And I think they too have a "no shipping/handling" offer but its with $50.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to compare the two. with what you want to buy. You can list what you want on the "wish list' and see what the price will be.

Amazon is definitely the best route if you want to buy the book, but the library is soooooooooo much cheaper!

If you need classics and don't mind reading on your computer visit Project Gutenberg. It's free! You can download the stories in text, html, etc. What is even more great about this is you can open the text files in Word and highlight and bookmark your favorite parts of the book. I've downloaded and read Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, H.G. Wells, Thackeray from this site. If you have the cash, send them a donation, it will still be cheaper than going to a book shop.

Amazon is an excellent source to order through the net, especially if you can't get out. You can buy perfectly good used editions, (sometimes first editions!) at very low prices. Even with shipping, you still get a great deal.

If you want to go shopping there is Half Price books which belies it's name. Unless a hardcover's original price was a dollar, I've gotten good books for fifty cents. You can not go wrong at any discount book place.

If you are a "shopper", go to any book store and mull over their discounted books. Every store has them and in many titles. Hope this helps.

If you buy them used through Amazon, you can get books very cheap. Even if the S/H cost is more than the book, you still get a very good deal.

The Amazon marketplace is a good resource if you don't mind buying second-hand books (I've bought books for as cheap as a penny there!). I'd also try www.play.com which offers free delivery world-wide but doesn't have such an extensive listing of books as Amazon does.

I've been going to second hand stores to get my books. The most I spent on a hard-cover was $1. Can't get cheaper than that.

If you like to swap books and do not necessarily require books to be in "brand new" condition, check out www.paperbackswap.com. This is an on-line book-swapping site for both paperbacks and hardbacks. It has a huge following.
