I'm wanting to start a home based business. I'd do personalized paper products. I could take a digital photo of anything and turn it into stationary, post cards, letterhead. I also do personalized products, greeting cards, postcards, letterhead, envelopes, business cards, etc. Anyone have any idea what I would need to do to get it started. Are there grants out there to help me fund it? What all would I need to do to make it legal? Basically start to finish building your own business. Thank you for your help!

I don't have money yet to start this, and my credit isn't so hot. I've heard of stuff out there for women to start businesses etc.

Any ideas on software I could use that works well. Any ideas on what types of office equipment would work best for me?

I appreciate all the answers so far, but please... I know what kind of business I want to start. Please do not spam my question by posting work at home etc jobs here. Thanks.

I don't need people telling me what home-based businesses you can start by going to some website and doing whatever. I already know my business, I just need ideas to start it..

Thanks!

You'd need a book to answer all yours questions, and I do recommend hitting the book store for business advice. Most states also have a Small Business Office and they can provide a great deal of information, especially on things like a wholesalers license. Minority Business Office might be a separate state agency or it could be part of the Small Business Office. Check the local government pages in your phone book or check with your Chamber of Commerce for small business support groups in your area and possible start up grants.

Prepare a business plan - you can look up what that is in wikipedia.org - because without one you will not receive any grant funds. They all require detailed business plans. You can't just walk in and say "I wanna' sell personalized paper products. Gimme money to do it."

Get out and about and see who your competition is. What do they sell.. how much do they charge.. are there minimums.. what is t heir turnaround time. what can I offer that these businesses don't have? Why would anyone buy from me over them?

First find out who will buy such items and for how much.

Will your costs be covered? Will there be a profit?

I 'd be glad to share a useful resource (link) that might be of help to you.

Send me an email if you'd like it.

Good Fortune to you.

Hi Stephanie,
Tried responding to your email but it wouldn't go through. You don't seem to be confirmed so I'll respond here...I hope the yahoo-bosses are OK with that.

First: You can find suppliers for most things at: http://suppliers.first411.com... But

In reading your question, I was reminded about Margit who has a business of personalizing items too. She did a few things extra in her business that created added dimensions that may be of interest. Check her story at: http://youtube.first411.com.

Additionally, http://work-from-home.first411.com may help you too,

My response is more focused at your underlying goal to succeed in your own home based business that speaks to your creative abilities. I really hope this helps you.

Drop me an email - let me know how things are progressing for you.

God Bless and Good Fortune to you.

Fred

I hope this helps to get you started, but I recently went to a candle store and in the very back of the store there was a small office and the lady there did the same thing you want to do, but I believe it was a program she had installed in her computer. So I would reccommend that you visit a similar place and ask them more detailed questions and let them know what you want to do and I am sure they would be glad to help you out.

well, I understand your concerns about setting up a home based business needs a lot of issues to be kept in mind which are truely immense and one can not be good in all.. Business means buying something for less and selling for high. In this world millions of products are there it is very difficult to figure out which one you should choose to deal with. Then comes licence, knowledge about the market trends and above all to stay in the market the research & development of the products you are dealing with. In business it is always better to have exlclusive rights of products to you. So to take care of all these exhaustive list of activities on your behalf there is one multi billion dollar company with a track record of almost 50 years and world wide presence in almost 92 countries. Another company is to provide the neccessary support and education to any aspiring person who is willing to set up home based business, works in unison with earier mentioned company. Only part to do in this business is to take the support of all these already laid out things to run our own business. Meaning no headache of taking orders of the products, delivery and return of the products. On top of all that mentioned there is a dedicated team of people in nearly every city of the world who has a vested interest in your success and has already started home based business like you, so they have first hand and detailed knowledge about the entire thing. I am also one among them, who started from the scratch with couple of dollars only to start with, no financial risk, no inventry of plethora of products to store. And millions of products at our disposal... Please feel free to ask me for all neccessary support needed.
