There are basically two types of tape. Packing tape and the like have an adhesive, this is a type of glue that is semi dry,it takes years for it to fully dry out. These types of tape are good for strong applications and long term use.

The other type of tape is cohesive, this sticks to things like chalk sticks to a chalkboard. Mostly these are used in applications where you need to remove it without damaging the surface it's stuck to like, post-it notes, electrical tape, and masking tape. This is keeping it kind of simple but I hope it helps.
