Haven't worked in 3 years, we have one car, and I take care of our son during the day. Just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and what they did?

You're going to have to solicit help from someone.....Mom, Dad, brother, sister......somebody! Then, find you a job, buy you a car when you can afford it, and move on in your life. It will NOT be easy, but it can, and MUST be done if you're getting a divorce. Good Luck!

Check bus routes. If you get the house he will probably get the car. Or ask that as part of the child support he gets you a car. Of course child support will be decreased in order to make up for the car payments. Or you can both sell the house, split the profits, you move to a smaller place and purchase a car with what you get from the house. I also suggest you look for employment because alimony isn't handed out freely anymore. Some states will allow it for 6 months which is what they beleive to be ample time for the "displaced" home maker to find employment outside the home. Good luck

Most couples split everything 50/50 - whose name is the car in? If its both of yours, you two may have to sell the car and split the money.

Find a place near a bus line or near your job (because you will have to get one) so you can get around with your son.

Good luck to you - I made it, so will you. I was a young single mom with a three year old. Life was hard for a while, but I worked up to a wonderful career in high tech marketing and left to do grad school in counseling.

Now she is eighteen and I finally have time to sleep.

make sure you get the car in the separation/divorce decree. Let him have a few extra bucks in his 401k to compensate...be fair and the judge will likely allow it even if ex doesn't want to do it.
