Roomba
I have an iRobot Roomba Discovery. I love it. It cleans my carpets better than any other vacuum that I have ever owned. It is bag less, so there are no messy bags to deal with. It cleans by itself, while I do other things, and it gets under beds and furniture where other vacuums can't go. It gets up pet hair and kitty litter like nobodies business. iRobot has excellent customer support.
Also, the Roomba is excellent for handicap or elderly people because you don't have to push a vacuum around.
iRobot has excellent customer support. All Roombas come with a 1yr. warranty. If something goes wrong with your robot within the warranty period, iRobot will send you a new (not rebuilt) robot free.
The Roomba is a little more expensive than other vacuums, but I think it is worth it.

Dysons are good but pricey. Do you want a canister or an upright? Kenmores get good ratings as do Hoover uprights. What I would do is go to
http://www.epinions.com
and search under vacuum cleaners. This is a site where anyone can rate things and of course, there are some people who just have an ax to grind about a store but some of the reviews are just great, very complete. In fact, one review explained the difference in models better than the manufacturer did when I wrote the company. You can compare prices there, too.
Good luck!

I prefer an upright vacuum cleaner and the type of attachments are important to me.
The weight of the cleaner may be important, especially if you have to carry it up and down the stairs.
I do not like the bagless cleaners because when emptying them the dust you've just vacuumed spills out everywhere so you have to vacuum again.
Consider: will you will be vacuuming around and under a lot of furniture; what type of floor surface you have (hard, carpet, etc); do you have pets that shed hair.
I've never owned a Dyson but I've seem Consumer Reports that say they are forever breaking down and are costly to repair. They are expensive to buy initially too.

I'll tell you what's not...a Dyson. Even though they're really healthy and pick up really well, they're heavy as hell and hard to move around. We have one and it's my sweetie's job to do the vacuuming...I can't do it! So despite all the kudos, don't spend the hundreds of dollars they cost to buy one! (Not exactly helpful, but a hint just the same!)

Consumer Reports listed the 'per hair' Dyson as the best and the Eureka 'Boss' as second best. Ther's about a $300 difference in the price of the two.

Hoover
However, if you vacuum quite a bit, it may be that the hose may be stopped up on yours.
