im gonna get a rat and i want a black one, i was thinking something like gypsy or phantom or diablo. i want a name thats really unique and i hate cute names like blackie and...well you know. im also wondering: should i get a boy or girl, ive had only girl rats before and they were both gray. ive also heard that the coloring effects their personality, so would black be a nice rat? i want black because thats my fav color.

Female rats are more prone to tumors than a male rat, but other than that theyre both great. I have a rabbit named Gypsy so I like that name :). I dont know what kind of sense of humor you have but when I was trying to think of a name for my rat, my father suggested D'con. (if you're unfamiliar with what d'con is, its a product people put down to kill mice...and probably rats) But this is the same man who named our old rabbit Din-Din. A friend of mine suggested I name my rat Snake food. ...yeah i have mean friends. But I like your choices. I hate cutsie dime a dozen names too. I try to be somewhat creative with my names when im choosing them.

I've had several black rats over the last 10 years and some of the names I've used are:
Cola
Nori
Nieger
Ravi
Ashwin
Majik
Bindi
Sheela
Kasseri
Oreo
Zander
Wicca
Pepato
Puppy
Sprout
Yikes!
Bugweed
Mutton
Rexy
Sindi
Albin
Nuit
Gnat
Skittles
Pebbles
Mouse
Muffin
Dori
Nacho
Pippa

I think you are going to come up with some great names once you have your new rats home and you've watched them for awhile. I like the ones you have picked out now. I also like Coal, Colby, Sooty, and Cinder for black rats.

Girls stay active and mischevious all of their lives.
Boys turn into big ol' lap rats when they get older.

No, color has nothing to do with personality. I've had black rats that have been little devils, others who have been as sweet as angels, and every personality in between. Just choose the rats that choose you when you go to get them. When they choose you the bonding is so much easier.

Nicodemus, after the wise and mystical leader of the rats in the animated film, "The Secret of NIMH", based on the book by Robert C. O'Brien, "Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH". That was one cool rat! I read the book first, but thought more people might recognise the film.

If the name's too long, there are lots of nice bits in it you can use for short too, Nico, Nicky, Demy, Demus.

Have fun with your rat! And remember to get well intorduced with him first, and make sure you like his personality, as that is always way more important than colour!

Darn, somoeone else said the name while I was preparing my answer! Lol!

Color does not affect the personality. If I were you, I would consider getting two rats, to keep each other company; they're very social. I have three, and they hang out together and play, it would be cruel to only keep one. I would get female rats, I think males smell a bit more. But it's really up to you. They say that males are tamer than females, but I really haven't noticed. One of my females is so tame, she falls asleep in my robe (others are a bit more skittish). You could name her Onyxia.

Get a male and name him Nicodemus. White rats are the most easy going and males have fewer behavioral problems than the females. Don't laugh y'all, I just found a web page on coloring and temperament www.ratbehavior.org/CoatColor.html
there's an article on eveything you need to know...they've apparently researched this topic.

Willard sounds like a cool name. You should get a boy because if your getting a black rat well...black kind of fits a boy and so does the name Willard.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Colouring will not affect their personality, but a male rat tends to be friendlier then a female.

How about Merlin for the name

First of all, color does not affect personality-unless of course, it's a specific breed/species of rat. I don't know about the male/female thing. behindthename.com is a good place to get names.
